Prof. Mbithi Peter Mulwa Felix is the new Vice-Chancellor (VC) at the University of Nairobi (UoN). He replaces Prof. George Magoha who retires on Monday January 5, 2015 after serving as VC for 10 years. His appointment was contained in a December 1, 2014 letter that was signed by the Cabinet Secretary of Education – Prof. Jacob Kaimenyi.
In the letter, Prof. Kaimenyi says: “In exercise of the power conferred to me by section 39(1) of the Universities Act, 2012, I hereby appoint you as the vice chancellor, University of Nairobi, for a period of five years with effect from January 6, 2015.”
The Students Organization of Nairobi University (SONU) President – Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino – played a key role in rallying students to reject any other appointee other than Prof. Mbithi. In the report presented by the University Council by its Chairman Dr. Idle Farah to Prof. Kaimenyi, Prof. Agnes Mwang’ombe was second while Prof. Isaac Mbeche and Prof. Lucy Irungu were third and fourth in that order.
Babu Owino was delighted after the appointment of Prof. Mbithi. He had this to say, “We accept him fully but he must be loyal to comrades, ensure fee is not increased to comrades as per the government directive. From January, he should ensure that HELB is increased, new hostels are built, and ensure comrades eat chicken not eating with and like chicken.”
